La Salle earns PCL boys title

The message scrawled on the front of Archbishop Wood's Thomas Keiser's tie-dyed T-shirt pretty much summed it up Sunday afternoon.   Scrawled in black on the yellow and green T-shirt in big bold letters, the words read: "You're in the Matrix."   "There is no water," said Keiser with a smirk, mimicking a line uttered by Keanu Reeves in the movie "The Matrix."   But this was no sci-fi flick.   This was just another day in the pool for La Salle's swim team, and for the 12th straight year the Explorers parted the water perfectly.   The Explorers made it a dozen consecutive titles by nearly doubling their closest pursuer, Monsignor Bonner, collecting 850 points en route to winning the Philadelphia Catholic League Boys Swimming Championship.   Bonner had 471 points, while Archbishop Wood was sixth with 184.   La Salle teammates Brad Green, Jeff Paul, Mike Harrigan, and Rob Queroli took turns beating each other as La Salle wrapped up wins in four individual events and all three relays.   Green took the 200-yard freestyle and finished second to Queroli in the 100 backstroke.   Queroli finished second in the 50 free to St. Joesph Prep's Terrence Fenningham, the meet's only individual double winner (50 free and 100 butterfly).   Harrigan won the 500 free and added a second win in the 100 butterfly, and Paul took the 100 free and finished third in the 50 free.   The meet was never in doubt.   For most of it, the Explorers' bench was relaxed.   After a regular season of dominance, this was merely their victory lap.   "The comp's not as good as at Eastern's," said Green, a senior.   "A lot of times it's nice to be able to come out and have a good time.   It's good to win.   It's good to be at the end of it."   "We're always proud to win league," said La Salle coach Frank Lichtner.   "We've had a great year.   We had our best Eastern (Regionals) against the best competition.   We're always proud to win the league.   It's our 12th straight year, which says something about our program."   As for Wood, it too had reason to celebrate.   The Vikings ended in sixth, placing all three relays in the top six while receiving excellent performances from senior Matt McKenzie (seventh in the 100 freestyle) and sophomore Matt O'Conner (fifth in the 100 backstroke, sixth in the 100 butterfly).   Keiser, a promising sophomore, finished 15th in the breaststroke.   "I was very proud of my team," said Wood coach Charlie Stillwell, who showed up at poolside with his hair spiked and dyed in Viking green.   "I lose a lot of good seniors.   I lose a lot of good swimmers, and I still have a great group."   Stillwell has a number of talented freshmen returning.   "It was a great way to go out," Stillwell said.   As for Lichtner, he isn't too worried about the Explorers' future.   "We're gonna be fine next year," he said.   Again.
