Archbishop Wood's Fitzgerald focuses on mining freestyle gold

What Jillian Fitzgerald lacks in endurance, she makes up in perseverance.   The Archbishop Wood senior has swum the 50-yard freestyle three times in the Catholic League championships.   She finished third as a freshman and second as both a sophomore and a junior.   There's no secret surrounding her goal this season.   Fitzgerald wants the gold.   "I would really like to win it this season," she said.   Wood coach Charlie Stillwell would like to see Fitzgerald win it.   "I can tell by her work ethic she is really going to do well," Stillwell said.   "I know she is looking to be first in the league.   She's on a mission to improve her times."   Fitzgerald owns a best of 25.1 seconds in the 50 freestyle, but she can also swim the butterfly and the breaststroke.   In the Vikings' first two meets - the Central Bucks East Relay Carnival two weeks ago and Saturday's North-South Relays at St. Joseph's University - Fitzgerald swam backstroke and butterfly legs.   When it's time to get serious, she will concentrate on the 50 freestyle.   "It's just an all-out sprint," Fitzgerald said.   "You just go.   I have speed, but not much endurance."   But endurance is an area in which Fitzgerald is improving.   "We're actually doing more yardage this year," she said.   "That has helped me a lot."   Fitzgerald is a tricaptain with seniors Michelle Long and Nicole Torano on a team that finished second to Cardinal O'Hara in the league championships last season.   "She leads by example," Stillwell said.   "She organizes pasta parties.   It's nice to see her grow and get to know everybody."
